Meeting at the Door |
What a day! We met in
the hotel lobby this morning with six other families in our adoption travel
group and drove to the local registration office to receive our children. They were coming from different orphanages
around the area and they began being delivered one by one not long after we
arrived. There was a big delay with the
kids from our orphanage but finally after a couple of hours of waiting little
Susan arrived.
She was put on the floor by the front door, they called out
her name, walked away and we walked over to her. She just stood there staring at us, right on
the verge of tears. I was willing to
wait until she was ready to come on her own but after a few minutes they told
us to move her away from the door. I
picked her up and the crying didn’t stop for the next hour or so. She was pretty freaked out. She let me hold her but if any of us touched
her face or hands or anywhere, she totally stiffened up. She seemed terrified. Poor little darling.
We signed paperwork and took official pictures then got on
the bus to head back to the hotel. No
more crying but still very freaked out.
I just held her close to me while she stared up at everything going on
around her.
When we got back to our room she let me lay her on the bed
and change her clothes and diaper. She
just lay there staring up at us. After
she was all dressed, I gave her a little kiss on the lips. She gave her lips a little twitch and I
thought, either she’s going to start wailing again or she’d like another
kiss. I gave her another kiss and got
another lip twitch from her. One more
kiss and she did a real pucker. Another kiss got me a smile. A few more kisses and the giggles started. We had a great time with all those kisses and
giggles. It felt so good that she was
finally feeling comfortable.
An Hour of Crying |
After a bit Todd and
the boys left to find some lunch. I
stayed in the room with Susan and we had another round of giggles. I got out the book Good Night Moon and tried
to read it to her. She kept closing it
and giggling. I gave up reading to her
and let her open and close the book over and over again. She just laughed her head off. So fun!
Susan is starting to open up to Todd too. She’s still a little freaked out when all
five of us are around her. We actually
haven’t started calling her Susan yet.
We’re calling her by her Chinese name (Li Si) today, then we’ll add
Susan to that tomorrow, calling her Susan Li Si, then shortly after that we’ll hopefully
be able to just shorten it to Susan.
We’re so thankful for this precious little girl. And we’re very thankful for all of you who
are praying for us. What a wonderful
experience this is. Keep praying for
health, bonding, and logistics.
